Product Description
Photochemical Fabrication of Ultra-Precision Etched Components for High-Volume Manufacturing
Description of Reel to Reel Etching:
What is Reel to Reel Etching?
Reel-to-reel etching also known as Roll-to-roll continuous etching, is a continuous chemical etching process where metal from a coil is fed through the entire etching line and rewound onto another reel. It is mainly used for high-volume production of precise, thin, and detailed parts, such as connectors, lead frames, and fine meshes.

Materials of Reel to Reel Etching:
- Stainless Steel – Known for its superior strength and corrosion resistance, stainless steel is the material of choice in demanding environments such as medical equipment and industrial sensing devices, where high durability is required.
- Copper – With outstanding electrical conductivity, copper is one of the most common choices for flexible circuits and interconnects. It combines cost-effectiveness with reliable adhesion, making it ideal for large-scale manufacturing.
- Aluminum – Valued for its light weight and natural resistance to corrosion, aluminum is frequently applied in aerospace and portable electronics where minimizing weight is essential.
How Does Roll-to-Roll Continuous Etching Work?
Reel to reel continuous etching is a high-efficiency process designed for mass production of precision metal parts. Instead of working with individual sheets, the process uses a coil of metal that moves continuously through each stage of production.
- Unwinding the Coil – A metal strip is fed from a large roll into the production line.
- Cleaning & Preparation – The strip is thoroughly cleaned to remove oils, oxides, or contaminants that could affect etching quality.
- Photoresist Coating – A light-sensitive resist is applied evenly across the strip’s surface.
- Imaging – The circuit or pattern is transferred onto the coated strip using UV exposure through a photomask.
- Etching – The strip passes through chemical etching baths, where exposed areas of metal are precisely dissolved to form the required design.
- Stripping – The remaining photoresist is removed, leaving clean, finished patterns.
- Rewinding – The processed strip is collected back into a roll for easy handling, inspection, or further assembly.
This continuous method ensures high throughput, consistent quality, and cost efficiency, making it especially suitable for electronics, automotive components, filtration meshes, and medical devices.

Advantages of Reel to Reel Etching
-
High Volume: The continuous nature enables rapid, large-scale production.
-
Cost-Effective: It reduces manufacturing costs, making it ideal for mass production.
-
Precise: Advanced techniques like dry etching ensure high-resolution patterns.
-
Adaptable: The process works with a wide range of materials and applications.
Applications of Reel to Reel Etching
-
Flexible Electronics: R2R etching creates fine patterns on flexible substrates, which is essential for manufacturing lightweight, bendable circuits, sensors, and displays.
-
Biomedical Devices: R2R etching is applied to produce flexible bioelectronic devices, including wearable sensors and implantable medical devices, by precisely patterning biocompatible materials.
-
Photovoltaics: It's used to pattern thin-film solar cells, improving their efficiency by optimizing light absorption and electrical performance.
-
MEMS: The process enables high-volume production of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) like accelerometers and pressure sensors, ensuring consistent quality.
-
RFID Tags: It's vital for creating the antenna patterns on RFID tags used for inventory and payment systems.
