What is Reel to Reel Etching?


Reel-to-reel etching also known as Roll-to-roll continuous etching, is a continuous chemical etching process where metal from a coil is fed through the entire etching line and rewound onto another reel. It is mainly used for high-volume production of precise, thin, and detailed parts, such as connectors, lead frames, and fine meshes.

How Does Roll-to-Roll Continuous Etching Work?

  1. Unwinding the Coil – A metal strip is fed from a large roll into the production line.
  2. Cleaning & Preparation – The strip is thoroughly cleaned to remove oils, oxides, or contaminants that could affect etching quality.
  3. Photoresist Coating – A light-sensitive resist is applied evenly across the strip’s surface.
  4. Imaging – The circuit or pattern is transferred onto the coated strip using UV exposure through a photomask.
  5. Etching – The strip passes through chemical etching baths, where exposed areas of metal are precisely dissolved to form the required design.
  6. Stripping – The remaining photoresist is removed, leaving clean, finished patterns.
  7. Rewinding – The processed strip is collected back into a roll for easy handling, inspection, or further assembly.


This continuous method ensures high throughput, consistent quality, and cost efficiency, making it especially suitable for electronics, automotive components, filtration meshes, and medical devices.
