Photo Chemical Etching (PCE)—also known as photochemical machining (PCM)—is a precision metal manufacturing process used to create complex, burr-free metal parts by selectively dissolving metal with a chemical etchant, guided by a photographic mask. Metal preparation
A thin metal sheet (e.g., stainless steel, copper, brass, nickel, titanium) is cleaned and coated with a light-sensitive photoresist.
Photo imaging
A phototool (artwork) containing the part design is aligned on the metal and exposed to UV light, transferring the pattern to the photoresist.
Developing
The exposed or unexposed photoresist is removed (depending on resist type), revealing precise areas of bare metal.
Chemical etching
The sheet passes through an etchant (such as ferric chloride), which dissolves the unprotected metal to form the required geometry.
Resist stripping & finishing
Remaining photoresist is stripped, and optional finishing processes (polishing, plating, passivation, forming) are applied.
