Custom Metal Etched Bipolar Plates with Advanced Corrosion Resistance for the Japan Market
Xinhaisen is a leading specialist in precision metal etching, offering high-performance, customized Bipolar Plates (BPPs) for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells and electrolyzers. Our plates are engineered to meet the demanding requirements of next-generation energy applications, providing exceptional electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, and structural integrity. Through our advanced etching technology, we deliver complex flow field patterns with unparalleled precision and consistency, enabling optimal gas distribution, water management, and overall stack efficiency.
We utilize state-of-the-art photochemical etching (PCE), a subtractive, stress-free, and burr-free manufacturing process.
Cleaning: The selected metal substrate is meticulously cleaned.
Lamination: Application of a photosensitive resist film.
Exposure & Development: UV light exposes the precise flow field pattern from a digital tool, which is then developed.
Etching: Controlled chemical etching removes exposed areas, forming the intricate channels and features.
Stripping & Finishing: The resist is removed, followed by thorough cleaning and optional post-processing.
Ultra-High Precision: Capable of producing extremely fine, complex flow field geometries (channels, lands, ports) with tight tolerances.
Burr-Free & Stress-Free: The etching process introduces no mechanical stress, thermal distortion, or burrs, eliminating downstream processing and ensuring perfect sealing surfaces.
Material Flexibility: We process a wide range of conductive materials, including stainless steel (316L, 304), titanium, aluminum, and coated metals.
Rapid Prototyping & Scalability: Digital tooling allows for fast, cost-effective design iterations and seamless scaling from R&D prototypes to high-volume production.
Superior Uniformity: Exceptional consistency across the entire plate surface and from part-to-part, critical for stack performance and longevity.
Custom-Designed Flow Fields: We work with clients to etch optimized patterns (serpentine, parallel, interdigitated, biomimetic) for specific application needs.

Q1: Why choose photochemical etching over stamping for Bipolar Plates?
A: Etching is ideal for complex, fine features, R&D iterations (no expensive hard tooling), and thin materials. It produces no burrs or work hardening, reducing sealing issues. Stamping is more cost-effective only for very high volumes of simple, stable designs.
Q2: Can you process coated metals for enhanced corrosion resistance?
A: Yes, we can etch substrates pre-coated with gold, platinum, or conductive carbon layers, and we also offer post-etch coating application services in partnership with specialized providers.
Q3: What file format do you require for production?
A: We prefer vector-based formats such as AutoCAD DXF or DWG. We can also work with Gerber or PDF files and provide DFM feedback.
Q4: What is your lead time for prototypes and production?
A: Prototype lead times are typically 1-3 weeks, depending on material. Production timelines are optimized for speed, and we are structured to accommodate large, sudden orders efficiently.
Q5: Do you provide quality certifications and testing reports?
A: Yes. We implement strict in-process SPC controls and can provide dimensional reports, material certificates, and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) data as required.
